Porsche's much-anticipated electric variants of the 718 Boxster and Cayman might be delayed, as a report by Automobilwoche suggests that the lifespan of their gasoline counterparts could extend beyond 2025. This development comes as Porsche reassesses its direction in light of slowing global electric vehicle (EV) sales.

A Shift in Porsche's EV Strategy

Porsche's ambitious goal to achieve 80% EV sales by 2030 is now under review. Challenges in EV adoption in key markets like China and the U.S. indicate a possible shift in their strategy. The Cayenne EV and the upcoming flagship model may also face postponements.

Gas Boxster and Cayman Resurgence?

Automobilwoche points out potential delays for the electric 718 Boxster and Cayman as Porsche tries to balance EV expectations with its renowned driving experience. Discussions with battery supplier Valmet highlight these challenges, which could extend the lifespan of current gas models past 2025.

Global EV Sales Challenges

Porsche faced a difficult year with declining EV sales. Taycan sales fell by 52% in Europe, and the Macan EV has sold only 6,377 units so far. In China, sales dropped by 29%, and the Taycan experienced a 35% decrease in the U.S. and a 50% decline globally. Competitive EV pricing in China and increasing global competition add to these issues.

Revisiting Internal Combustion Engines?

Given these difficulties, Porsche might revisit its aggressive EV plan. The Automobilwoche report hints at a potential renewed focus on gasoline engines, particularly affecting the Cayenne, which was initially intended to be an EV by 2026. If Porsche opts to revamp the existing platform, it could impact the future of the large SUV, internally referred to as K1, despite its current incompatibility with internal combustion under the SSP framework.

Summary: Porsche's electric ambitions are encountering obstacles, possibly delaying the launch of the 718 Boxster and Cayman EVs and extending their gasoline versions beyond 2025. The automaker is reconsidering its plans amidst declining EV sales, competitive pressures, and market dynamics, which could also affect the future of the Cayenne and other models.

It's understandable that Porsche is facing challenges in the EV market, especially with so much competition out there. Adjusting their plans might be the best course of action.

I wonder if this is just a strategy to keep the gas models relevant. Can we really trust that they will fully commit to EVs in the future?

Porsche adjusting their timeline isn't surprising given the current market conditions. It will be interesting to see how they proceed.
