Rivian has launched its first next-generation chargers as part of its Adventure Network, now accessible to other electric vehicles (EVs). These chargers are located outside Joshua Tree National Park, following the initial station set up near Yosemite.
- Currently, vehicles with NACS ports need an adapter at these stations.
- Rivian plans to fully integrate NACS in its new models by 2025.
However, a native NACS connection will require a future hardware update.
Rivian's Adventure Network aims to expand to over 3,500 fast chargers at 600 sites across the US and Canada, although it faces significant competition from larger networks like Tesla’s Supercharger.
The Joshua Tree facility, developed from a repurposed house, offers:
- 12 Level 3 CCS chargers accessible to all EVs
- A store with Rivian products and sales
- Family-friendly amenities like a playground and hammocks
The location aims to provide comprehensive service while potentially attracting new customers through unique on-site experiences.
Further expansions are planned for late 2024, in locations including Michigan, New York, Texas, and The Hamptons. However, Rivian's growth pace remains uncertain compared to its competitors.
Rivian's CEO, RJ Scaringe, emphasizes the need for a robust charging network to support electrification and new model launches, despite Rivian's currently limited charging presence.
Rivian's Adventure Network is making progress with inclusive charging stations complemented by customer-friendly experiences. Yet, challenges lie ahead as the company races to expand its footprint in the competitive charging landscape, aiming to align its network with the upcoming NACS adoption.
