Jean Marie Jennings, a pioneering figure in automotive journalism, passed away on December 16 at the age of 70, following her battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Early Years and Beginnings

Born in New Baltimore, Michigan, Jean was the only girl in a family of six children. Her driving journey began at 14 in Ecuador, maneuvering a Toyota Land Cruiser through the Andes. Leaving the University of Michigan after a year, she explored various jobs, eventually joining Chrysler Proving Grounds as a mechanic and crash tester. Her brother, automotive journalist Paul Lienert, encouraged her to apply to Car and Driver in 1980.

Blossoming at Car and Driver

Jean joined Car and Driver in January 1981 and quickly became a fan favorite. Her unique style and adventurous spirit transformed readers' connections with the magazine. She thrived on excitement, participating in events like demolition derbies and Brock Yates's One Lap of America.

Founding Automobile Magazine

In 1985, she co-founded Automobile Magazine with David E. Davis Jr., rising to editor-in-chief by 2000. She contributed significantly to the magazine's success, launching the sister site Jean Knows Cars, which ran until 2016.

Jean was synonymous with excellence. Under her leadership, the magazine garnered multiple awards, including the prestigious Ken Purdy Award. Her charisma attracted industry giants and celebrities, from guest appearances on The Tonight Show to collaborating with Jerry Seinfeld.
