The all-electric Mercedes-Benz CLA has set a new EV distance record, traveling 2,309.6 miles in 24 hours on Italy’s Nardò test track. This achievement surpasses the previous record by more than 180 miles, which was held by the Porsche Taycan. Impressively, the car maintained an average speed of 96.2 mph throughout the test.
Mercedes utilized two nearly production-ready CLA models for this record-breaking run, requiring 40 quick 10-minute recharges. These cars are built on the new 800-volt MMA platform, enabling rapid DC charging at up to 320kW. Just a 15-minute charge can add approximately 249 miles of range. The vehicles were equipped with a rear-mounted 268bhp Electric Drive Unit 2.0, featuring technology from the Vision EQXX and a novel two-speed transmission. Mercedes aims for a WLTP range of about 466 miles. There's also a 4Matic version available, offering an additional 107bhp motor for enhanced performance.
Launching next year, the CLA will also introduce mild-hybrid variants, contrary to earlier reports suggesting exclusive EV options. These hybrids feature a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, producing between 134bhp and 188bhp, paired with an electrified eight-speed DCT gearbox. A 48-volt system powers a compact 27bhp electric motor.
Mercedes presents a compelling choice: will you opt for the cutting-edge electric CLA, or the versatile mild-hybrid version?
Summary: The electric Mercedes CLA set a new EV distance record at Nardò by traveling 2,309.6 miles in 24 hours. With its advanced technology and innovative charging solutions, the CLA is also paving the way for mild-hybrid models, offering both power and versatility.
