Top Gear has tackled various daring projects, but we had never ventured into the world of motorcycles—until now. Partnering with Royal Enfield and passionate bikers, we transformed a standard Continental GT650 into a custom crossover: stylish yet practical. To truly test this unique bike, I took it to the Great Malle Rally.
At the starting line in Lizard Point, I met rally leader Robert Nightingale, who shared his vision following an inspiring ride across Mongolia. This sparked the creation of the Great Malle Rally—a six-stage journey through Britain’s breathtaking landscapes, fostering connections among riders in teams.
This rally isn’t a race but a checkpoint trial that encourages camaraderie. With 21 nations represented and a variety of motorcycles, including our eye-catching cafe racer adorned with artistic livery, we began navigating the challenging terrain.
Riding the Continental GT650, I appreciated its manageable power, engaging with every rev and gear. Modifications such as the advanced Nitron suspension enhanced our comfort over rugged roads. The experience was immersive, allowing us to connect deeply with the environment.
Evenings spent in bell tents, sharing stories with fellow riders over whisky, embodied the rally’s communal spirit. Bonds formed over shared struggles, laughter, and moments of contemplation about life’s heavier themes.
As we ventured into Wales and the Peak District, weather conditions grew grim, testing our resolve. After thrilling sections of winding roads, we found humor in the absurd culinary offerings at a motorcycle café—a welcome distraction from the damp chill.
Riding alongside experienced bikers bolstered our confidence as we embraced the thrill of the journey. We pushed through the notoriously steep Hardknott Pass, where mishaps served as reminders of the challenges we faced without protective shells.
In the Highlands, the dramatic changes in scenery made our bikes come alive. The Continental GT650—thanks to custom enhancements—thrived on the winding roads, offering a unique sense of freedom amidst stunning landscapes.
Finally, we reached the finish line at the Castle of Mey in northern Scotland, where every rider, including Ezra (who humorously dropped his bike), celebrated their triumph. Our custom Royal Enfield had evolved into a reliable companion throughout this journey.
The Great Malle Rally strips away life’s complexities, reminding us of the joy found in forging connections. As Malle says, “Prepare to get lost.” In the end, we discovered that it’s all about finding yourself on the open road.
