Iconic Names Return

Toyota has revived the Urban Cruiser name, joining the trend of bringing back iconic, though not always household, nameplates. Unlike the bulky bZ4X, the Urban Cruiser's name seems more fitting as it tackles the competitive EV crossover segment.

Enter the EV Competition

This new model is essentially a Toyota-badged twin of the Suzuki e-Vitara, targeting rivals like the Kia EV3, Volvo EX30, Hyundai Kona Electric, Skoda Elroq, and more. It's a crowded field, but Toyota is up for the challenge.

Platform and Performance

Built on a fresh electric platform, the Urban Cruiser offers two battery options: a 49kWh or a 61kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery. The 49kWh variant features a 142bhp front-wheel drive. Meanwhile, the 61kWh can be configured with 172bhp FWD or 181bhp AWD, although range estimates aren't yet available.

Design and Dimensions

Inspired by last year's Urban SUV Concept, the design is described as "impactful" with a "powerful lower body section." It boasts wheels ranging from 18 to 19 inches and a distinctive black roof option. Size-wise, it’s slightly bigger than the Yaris Cross but benefits from a longer wheelbase, adding interior space.

Interior Features

Inside, the Urban Cruiser mirrors the e-Vitara's technology suite with a 10.25-inch digital dash and a 10.1-inch infotainment screen. Features like a sliding rear bench, a heat pump as standard, and a suite of safety systems, including adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera, come as standard in all UK trims.

Future Outlook

With just the bZ4X and the Urban Cruiser for now, Toyota plans to expand to six dedicated EVs in Europe by 2026, making 2025 a pivotal year.

Summary

Toyota's Urban Cruiser revives a classic name as it enters the bustling EV crossover market. Built on a new electric platform, it offers versatile battery and drivetrain options, robust design, and a tech-laden interior, setting a strong stage for Toyota's EV expansion in Europe.
