Genesis finds itself at a crossroads with its G70 compact sedan, a former MotorTrend Car of the Year. As sedans are becoming less common, the G70 faces the challenge of selecting future powertrains, hinting that its current form might soon be outdated.
For 2024, the G70 is powered by Hyundai's 2.5-liter turbocharged I-4, delivering 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. Coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it drives a rear-wheel model from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds. Available in both rear- and all-wheel drive, it features new Brembo brakes. The 3.3-liter twin-turbo option is also available with similar upgrades.
There were mixed opinions on the sound of the turbo-four, but its power impressed many. “The new engine is gutsy,” noted Associate Editor Billy Rehbock. Editors found the RWD version agile and lively, while the AWD added weight but offered stable handling without testing the rear tires' limits.
Despite appreciation for its powertrain, some critics pointed out missing luxury features that competitors offer. “Where are the dual 12.3-inch displays?” asked Deputy Editor Alexander Stoklosa. The lack of updates in technology and design casts doubt on the G70's future.
This update is minor, especially considering Genesis’ recent tech advancements across other models. Guest judge Chris Theodore remarked, “The G70 is still a fine sport sedan and a great value, but it lacks the novelty needed for COTY consideration.”
In the 2025 Car of the Year evaluation, the G70 was assessed based on criteria like efficiency, design, safety, engineering excellence, value, and performance. Eligible cars must be new or significantly revised.
The 2024 Genesis G70 is still an appealing sport sedan with a strong new engine, but it lacks major advancements to contend as a COTY finalist. As technology and design evolve, the lingering question is—how long will the G70 last in its current form?
